An Albanian wedding is more than one evening of celebration. It often lasts several days and brings two families together. For the second generation abroad and for partners who are not Albanian, here are the main customs at a glance. Every region and every family celebrates a little differently.
Fejesa – the engagement
The families meet and the couple exchange rings. This often marks the official start of wedding planning.
Paja – the trousseau
The bride brings clothes, textiles and gifts into the marriage. In many families the trousseau is displayed before the wedding.
Kanagjegji – the henna night
On the evening before the wedding, the women celebrate with the bride’s family. The bride’s hands are painted with henna while traditional songs are sung.
Krushqit – fetching the bride
On the wedding day, the groom’s family drives in a convoy to the bride’s home, often with horns and flags. The bride’s farewell to her parents‘ home is one of the most emotional moments.
Vallja – the dance
People dance in a circle, hand in hand. Traditional dances and songs are part of every celebration – in the village and in the restaurant.
Tradition meets modern celebration
Many couples today combine both: the customs during the day with family, and the big celebration at a venue in the evening.
